Deby Sacks Petroleum Minister

Tuesday, January 15, 2019

Chadian President Idriss Deby dismissed his Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Boukar Michel and appointed Finance Minister Mahamat Allali Abakar as his temporary replacement.

According to reports, Deby blames him for the double allocation of an oil block to both Chinese and Taiwanese companies.

Michel was fired while attending the 9th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held January 10-13 in Abu Dhabi.

Boukar Michel has notably participated in negotiations for the restructuring of Chad’s debt, after oil revenues collapsed in recent years because of low oil prices.

Chad produces about 130,000 bpd
