Italian service firm Saipem, partially owned by ENI, was approached by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding contracts out of Algeria. The firm’s CFO, Alberto Chiarini, said that the DOJ sent a request for information on the probe into alleged corruption in Algeria.
“They sent us a request for information on Algeria,” Chiarini said on a conference call with analysts.
The firm is already in the midst of investigations in Italy and Algeria.
The investigations revolve around claims that the firm paid bribes to secure a series of contracts in Algeria worth $11 billion.
Last year Saipem and the DOJ entered into a tolling agreement to extend the limitation period applicable to any possible violations of federal laws in the US regarding its activities in Algeria by six months. Saipem has denied any wrongdoing.
