Angola’s president, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, has confirmed his intention not to run for re-election this year. His decision on running puts an end to his almost four-decade rule of the African country.
This is not the first time dos Santos has stated he would not be standing for the office of president as in March of last year the president stated he would not run in elections.
Dos Santos’ party, the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), has approved Defense Minister Joao Lourenco as its presidential candidate.
There is little doubt however, that dos Santos will still hold the reins in the country even after leaving the office of president.
