Dozen Dead in Tanker Explosion

Monday, January 14, 2019

In Nigeria an overturned oil tanker exploded, killing at least a dozen people who were scooping up the fuel leaking from the truck. According to a Nigerian police spokesperson 12 bodies and 22 seriously burned people were taken to the hospital.

“We have recovered 12 corpses and taken 22 persons with serious burns to hospital,” a police spokeswoman, Irene Ugbo was cited by the Associated Press as saying. She said the blast occurred on January 11 in Cross River State.

Some residents put the death toll closer to 60.

Richard Johnson, a witness, told the Associated Press that about 60 people had been inside a pit scooping fuel when the tanker exploded. “It is not likely that anyone inside the pit survived as there was a lot of fuel in the pit,” Johnson said.

This is unfortunately not an isolated incident in Nigeria. In early 2018 more than 30 died while scooping fuel from another accident involving a tanker.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the truck to overturn.
