Islamist militants attacked security positions in the Tunisian town of Ben Guerdan near the Libyan border, leaving dozens dead in the melee. The Islamist fighters attacked army and police barracks and at least 30 are dead, including civilians.
According to reports from the Interior Ministry, national forces killed 21 of the militants and arrested six after they attacked military and police posts.
Tunisian authorities closed off the nearby beach resort town of Djerba and closed two border crossings with Libya, the TAP state news agency said. It was not immediately clear if the attackers crossed the border, but the Tunisian government has been fearful that the violence in Libya perpetrated by ISIS could move over the border.
Just last month Tunisia constructed a fence on its frontier to aid in keeping ISIS fighters out. The 200-km long fence has electronic monitoring systems. Tunisia’s Defense Minister Farhat Hachani told reporters on February 6 that troops raised an earth wall and dug trenches 2 km from the Libyan border.
The country’s forces were also to receive training from the EU and US military to improve electronic surveillance with cameras and radar.
