The oil ministry in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has issued a tender for bids to exploit reserves of methane gas in Lake Kivu. The tender was announced by the prime minister’s office on its twitter account but offered no details.
“It is very important that we exploit this gas, because otherwise it has the potential to explode and cause significant damage to the population,” an oil ministry official said in a Reuters report under the condition of anonymity.
Currently only 9% of DRC’s population has access to power and meeting its population’s energy demand has become a government priority.
