DRC Seeks Access to East African Crude Oil Pipeline

Thursday, May 11, 2023

Congo’s Minister of Hydrocarbons Didier Budimbu met with Ugandan Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu to discuss the possibility of accessing the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) to transport its crude from its side of the Albertine Graben.

A statement release on Twitter by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons stated, “Uganda acknowledged the crucial requirement of DRC to access the East African Crude Oil Pipeline for the transport of crude oil to be produced from the oil exploration blocks located in the Albertine Graben in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” the statement read.

In January, EACOP received a license for the construction of the pipeline. The construction license will enable the company to kickstart the development of the 1,443-km, 24-inch diameter heated and buried crude oil pipeline. Following this, EACOP was granted an investment license from the Uganda Investment Authority in late March.

Just a month later, a strategic liaison office in Masaka City was opened by EACOP to enhance its presence in the project areas in the different hub locations along the pipeline. “We are currently implementing the land acquisition process for the main right of way in both Uganda and Tanzania, and the process has involved extensive engagement with all our stakeholders. By setting up an office here, EACOP is making a crucial step on its path to easing access of its services,” stated John Bosco Habumugisha, EACOP Deputy Managing Director, at the time.

Activity on the pipeline project should see further momentum over the coming year with its completion date currently slated for 2025.
