Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has plans to build an eco-friendly LNG powered LNG carrier. The contract, valued at an estimated $ 200 million, will deliver a 174,000 cbm class “next generation” dual-fuel LNG carrier featuring a DSME-designed LNG supply system.
This system consists of a fuel supply device which enables ship propulsion by natural gas and a ‘partial re-liquefaction system’. When installed with ME-GI (MAN) engines, the system can enhance ship’s fuel efficiency by 20% compared to existing DFDE (Dual Fuel Diesel Electric) engines, while reducing costs on materials and operation. It is expected to have a significant impact on the market with up to 15,000 $/day operating cost saving at normal LNG carrier speed of 12 knot(22km/h).
The system is also compliant with recent global environmental regulations by reducing CO2, NOx and SOx emissions by over 30%.
DSME President and CEO Ko Jae-ho at the signing ceremony said: “DSME has sold related patent to the world’s biggest marine engine company and our LNG carrier technology has achieved recognition from clients worldwide. We will lead the world green ship market with our core technology that ensures both economic and environmental performances.”
