East Africa Keeps Afren Busy

Friday, October 31, 2014

Afren plc has been kept busy on the exploration end in East Africa with a number of activities taking place in several countries. In Kenya, seismic operations commenced on Block 1 during October 2014 and an EIA for drilling operations is ongoing. The company said that exploration drilling will start after the processing and interpretation of these seismic lines.

On Blocks L17 and L18, Afren plans to shoot a 250-line km 2D seismic program this quarter followed by a two-well drilling campaign in 2015.

On the island nation of Madagascar a shallow borehole coring program is underway and is expected to be completed in November 2014. The shallow borehole coring program includes the re-drill of a previously reported oil discovery and one of the two coring rigs is currently being mobilized from the north side of the block to the south side of the block where a 1902 oil discovery is located.

In Tanzania, further interpretation work has elevated the Nanasi prospect to the forefront of the drilling opportunities in the deep water portion of the Tanga Block and work is ongoing to raise the shallow water prospects to ready-to-drill status.  This will involve the acquisition of a shallow water 3D seismic survey of around 400 sq km subject to regulatory approval in Q4 2014/Q1 2015. These plans are conditional on Afren advancing into the next license period which is pending regulatory approval.
