EGPC Reveals New Discovery

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Egyptian General Petroleum Corp. (EGPC), Egypt’s state-run oil and gas firm, reported that a new oil discovery was made in the country’s Western Desert. The well, drilled near the end of January, was in the Abu Sinan area of the Western Desert.

“Recoverable reserves of this exploration are estimated at 2.2 million barrels of oil from the upper marine layer and about 11 Bcf of gas from Abu Rawash sand layer (G),” said Tahir Zafzaf, chairman of EGPC in a statement.

The new discovery is a “special” one for the state-owned EGPCas it gives a higher potential for finding more petroleum reserves in the Western Desert’s geological structures, according to the statement.

The discovery could eventually yield up to 1,358 bpd of oil. Zafzaf estimated the discovery’s recoverable reserves at 2.2 million barrels of crude oil and 11 Bcf of natural gas. “Electrical stability tests in Abu Senan have revealed the presence of hydrocarbon-rich layers,” he added.
