Tarek El Molla, the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and his Israeli counterpart Minister Yuval Steinitz, have agreed to working on an official agreement to link the massive Leviathan field offshore Israel to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Egypt’s northern coast through an offshore pipeline, according to a Ministry press release.
This came during their meeting to discuss the ways of joint cooperation to boost energy security in both countries.
“The two ministers agreed on the construction of (an) offshore gas pipeline from the Leviathan gas field to the liquefaction facilities in Egypt, in order to increase the gas exports to Europe through the liquefaction facilities in Egypt,” Steinitz’s office said in a statement.
The energy officials also discussed a number of opportunities for energy independence for Palestinians through different projects such as developing Offshore Gaza field, establishing electric power station in Jenin, and supply natural gas to Palestinians.
During the meeting, the two parties expressed their support for establishing a robust and interconnected energy infrastructure to maximize the natural gas reserves and resources in the Middle East and the greater Mediterranean region.
