To meet its short fall in feedstock to power the country, Egypt is said to be in talks with fellow MENA countries to secure natural gas supplies. According to an interview with Egypt’s oil minister Osama Kamal run on Al Youm Television, Egypt is in discussions with both Algeria and Qatar for gas supplies.
“We are currently in talks with Qatar and Algeria to import natural gas…we will buy it at international market prices,†Kamal said in the interview.
Egypt, at one time a significant gas exporter, is now strapped for supplies to meet domestic consumption. The country began reining in exports in 2012 and is planning to issue a tender soon for local firms to import LNG to meet its domestic needs, Kamal said.
