Egypt Courts Algeria for Gas

Monday, March 24, 2014

In an effort to gain feedstock for its power plants during the summer months, Egypt is calling on a number of firms to secure natural gas imports, including Algeria’s Sonatrach. The country’s Minister of Petroleum, Sherif Ismail, was quoted as saying in the Al-Bursa newspaper that the negotiations are over “around 400 Mmcm of LNG daily throughout the coming summer.”

Sonatrach was the only company the Egyptian minister listed by name.

While Egypt has two LNG plants and a pipeline to export gas, it has no facility to import the product. There has been talk of securing a floating LNG import terminal for some time, but nothing has materialized as yet.

The country has significant natural gas resources and production, unfortunately it is not enough to meet its ever growing domestic demands.
