Egypt Expanding Petchem Capacity

Thursday, March 23, 2017

Egypt plans to establish a new polypropylene factory at the Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals Co.’s (Sidpec) headquarters in Alexandria. The new facility will be established in conjunction with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM).

The new factory, to be operational in 2021, will require $800 million and $1 billion in investments.

The new polypropylene factory will have a production capacity of around 450,000 tpa. While the factory will rely on imported propane, that need will be lessened when gas discoveries from the Western Desert are developed.
