Egypt Targets 2017 for Zohr Field

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

First flows from ENI’s massive natural gas discovery in the Mediterranean off the coast of Egypt, the Zohr discovery, are targeted for 2017 according to the North African country’s Minister of Petroleum Tarek El Molla.

The Minister said the Zohr would be online a year ahead of schedule, although some in the industry have noted that even the timeline of 2018 was highly optimistic.

The Zohr gas field is estimated to contain 30 Tcf of gas and ENI has already submitted its plan of development to Egyptian authorities.

Additionally the Ministry revealed in a statement that six new oil and gas exploration contracts worth an estimated $2.2 billion had been approved by the country’s president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The agreements include the search for oil and gas in the Mediterranean, Nile Delta, Western Desert and the Gulf of Suez.
