A Damanhour criminal court in Egypt sentenced five people to death for damaging an oil pipeline last November and causing an explosion and fire, resulting in nine people being killed and eleven more wounded. Five other defendants involved in the pipeline vandalism and oil theft received a sentence of 25 years in jail.
The defense claimed that the defendants were trying to steal gas from the pipeline at the time, having rented a private property in northern Egypt, through which a petroleum pipeline passed, to dig underground and place smaller pipes to steal fuel from the pipeline.
The defendants have the right to appeal against the sentences in the Court of Cassation.
