A great gesture made by president Al-Sisi left most Egyptians and people worldwide in awe when he rushed his visit in Kuwait, to return to Egypt to wish Coptic Christians a Merry Christmas at the Christmas mass held at Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral.
President Al-Sisi’s gesture led many Muslims to also following their president’s example and contacted their fellow Coptic friends and colleagues and wished them a Merry Christmas. His appearance at the Christmas mass inspired people worldwide and received support from many Coptics.
While researching for this article, our team came across a post on Facebook written by Malak Makarem, Social Media Manager at JWT Cairo, that I thought echoed the spirit that you would expect as a reaction to Al-Sisi’s gesture.
“Just a thought … I woke up today with the word ‘coexist’ echoing in my head and filling my heart with joy. Sisi’s appearance yesterday at the Christmas mass was very heart warming, even for a Muslim female living in an Islamic nation. It gave me an unusual reassurance that I questioned. I concluded that because deeply in my heart I felt that sons and daughters of all religions were brothers and sisters, the recognition of my president to my thought left me feeling understood and rightfully represented.”
Wouldn’t it be great if Malak’s thoughts and feelings were experienced by even a small percentage of the Egyptian population, perhaps spreading to other areas of the Muslim world? Al-Sisi not only demonstrated the action of a competent leader, but in turn also offered an olive branch for both Muslims and Christians in the country to begin a healing process that is sorely needed in a country torn not only by civil strife the past few years, but religious divides over centuries.
