Egypt’s Cabinet Resigns—Petroleum Minister Named PM

Monday, September 14, 2015

Egypt saw a shake-up in its cabinet with the resignation of Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb and the entire cabinet. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi appointed Sherif Ismail, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, to replace Mehleb as prime minister.

Sisi has ordered the new prime minister to form a new cabinet within a week.

Ismail has held a number of positions in Egypt’s oil and gas sector including chairman of EGAS and chairman of GANOPE.

The resignations come just days after the country’s agriculture minister, Salah El Din Mahmoud Helal, resigned and was arrested on charges of corruption.
