El Sharara Production Resumption in the Works

Friday, January 3, 2014

There have been some indications issued by the Libyan government that oil production from the El Sharara oilfield will resume soon. Libyan officials said that protesters have agreed to suspend their two-month strike at the el Sharara oilfield, one of the country’s largest, within three days.

Tribesmen in the area of the oilfield have been calling for greater local power, holding the 350,000 bpd hostage until they get what they want.

Libya’s Ministry of Defense said the protesters had agreed to suspend their strike after the government agreed to listen to their demands. “They agreed to lift the blockage,” a Ministry spokesman said.

NOC spokesman Mohamed al-Harari was quoted in a Reuters report as saying, “Engineers are preparing the field to restart production.”

The protesters had demanded the set up of a local council and granting national identity cards for tribesmen from the minority Tuareg tribe.
