Italian firm ENI has denied any participation in illegal activities in Algeria. The company initiated an independent internal audit as soon as it became aware of the investigation launched by the Milan prosecutor in regards to Saipem’s actions in the country. It has made the results of the activities already completed available to the investigating authorities.
ENI’s statement revolves around statements made to the Milan prosecutor by a former Saipem manager during his interrogation saying that ENI and its CEO, Paolo Scaroni were involved in illegal activities in Algeria; ENI and its CEO deny any involvement in the events under investigation.
Scaroni has recommended that Saipem put in place a series of detailed internal audits and initiate actions of organizational and managerial discontinuity. This led, among other things, to the dismissal of the Saipem manager who has allegedly made the comments reported by the press. Saipem has already started legal action against this manager for compensation for damages suffered.
