ENI Limits Expat Staff in Libya to Offshore

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

In light of the recent events between Islamist militants and Egypt, as well as the ongoing battles between the rival governments that have basically divided the country in two, ENI has reduced its staff of expatriates. The Italian firm, which historically has been responsible for a considerable amount of Libya’s production, said that while staff numbers were reduced it was continuing to produce oil and gas in the country.

In a comment through a spokesman to Reuters, the company said that its expatriates and local workers in Libya were enough to guarantee normal production activities in the country, although the use of expatriates had been reduced and limited to offshore facilities.

Italy closed its embassy in Tripoli on February 15 and called for UN action to calm the worsening conflict there, although Prime Minister Matteo Renzi refrained from actually calling for military action.
