The exploration pace in the Somali region of Ethiopia should pick up a bit if the signed peace deal between the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebels and the government holds. The government signed the agreement on October 21.
Ethiopia’s parliament removed the ONLF from a list of banned movements as part of a reform drive being led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed earlier this year. The ONLF declared a ceasefire in August.
The two sides will form a committee to get to the underlying causes of the conflict. The peace agreement also calls for the ONLF to “pursue its political obligation through peaceful means,” according to a Reuters report.
The Ogaden region has seen several exploration campaigns which have resulted in the discovery of a substantial amount of natural gas, as well as oil deposits. China’s Poly-GCL Petroleum recently started exporting small amounts of hydrocarbons from the region.
