Protests raged in Ethiopia in recent days, leading to scores of protesters dying at the hands of security forces. In light of the anti-government protesters’ deaths, the UN asked to send international observers to investigate but the Horn of Africa nation’s government denied the UN’s pleas.
According to Getachew Reda, a government spokesman in an Al Jazeera report, the UN was entitled to its opinion but the government of Ethiopia was responsible for the safety of its own people.
During the anti-government protests in the regions of Oromia and Amhara at least 90 were killed.
Zeid Raad Al Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said allegations of excessive use of force must be investigated and that his office was in discussions with Ethiopian authorities.
