As long distance runner Feyisa Lilesa crossed the finish line to take the silver medal in the men’s marathon in Rio de Janiero, he raised his arms above his head in a gesture of protest against the killing and abuse of the Oromo people in Ethiopia. Later at a press conference he repeated the gesture.
The 26-year old Ethiopian said that he would be punished if he returned to his country, probably killed. He added that he was not sure whether he would return to Ethiopia or go to another country.
The International Olympic Committee frowns upon political demonstrations and are investigating the matter. It is possible Lilesa could face repercussions, even have his medal stripped away. In 1968 two American medalists were stripped of their medals for making a Black Power gesture.
