Final results from Ethiopia’s May elections have the country’s ruling party, the EPRDF, sweeping all but one seat of the 547-parliament. Opposition parties complained of voting abuses.
Reports out of the country have a delay for voting for the last seat due to clashes between backers of an independent and those supporting the candidate of the EPRDF. But the EPRDF is expected to win that too.
Merga Bekana, the electoral board chairman, declared the final tally, barring the last seat, at a news conference.
While there have been claims of irregularities and abuses in the voting process, Merga said that the election was “coordinated in a free, fair, peaceful, credible and democratic manner.”
