Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Resigns

Monday, February 19, 2018

Ethiopia’s prime minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, submitted his resignation as both the country’s prime minister and chairman of the ruling party in a televised address.

“Unrest and political crisis have led to the loss of lives and displacement of many,” he said in the address. “I see my resignation as vital in the bid to carry out reforms that would lead to sustainable peace and democracy.”

Hailemariam will stay on in his position in a caretaker capacity until the parliament accepts his resignation and names his successor.
