ExxonMobil CEO at Top of Trump’s Secretary of State Choices

Sunday, December 11, 2016

Rex Tillerson, the CEO of US supermajor ExxonMobil seems to be emerging as President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for secretary of state. Tillerson met with Trump on December 6.

The news that Tillerson is a favorite for the position follows the formal withdrawal of former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Mainstream media outlets are reporting that Tillerson has moved ahead of Mitt Romney for the position.

While most say the ExxonMobil executive does not have political experience, those in the industry would refute that as the “oil game” is highly political. Tillerson, in his position with the US producer and with other firms, has decades of negotiating globally, including in highly volatile regions where civil uprisings are the norm, and resource nationalism rears its head from time to time.
