ExxonMobil Exiting Madagascar

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

Due to some disappointing results in Madagascar, ExxonMobil Corp. ended its oil exploration program in the island nation, according to the country’s Minister of Mining and Petroleum Joeli Valerien Lalaharisaina.

“Exxon has left Madagascar because it was not convinced by the potential of the oilfield,” Lalaharisaina told Reuters. “The potential is not yet defined, but the results of investigations have shown that the oilfield was not interesting for a company of Exxon Mobil’s scale.”

Lalaharisaina said medium-sized explorers may be interested in taking over the blocks.

It was reported in May by Sterling Energy, ExxonMobil’s partner on the Ampasindava, that the pair had decided to exit the block. The decision came after a detailed subsurface re-assessment of the prospectivity of the block and discussions with OMNIS.
