ExxonMobil Exiting South Sudan

Friday, August 15, 2014

Reports have ExxonMobil exiting its partnership with Total in South Sudan. The supermajor’s exit is blamed on the insecurity of the country due to its ongoing civil war.

While ExxonMobil is exiting, Total says it plans to remain in the country with its other partner Kuwait Foreign Exploration Petroleum Co.

Total has held its acreage in South Sudan for decades, even through the civil war between the north and south before South Sudan became its own country. During the first civil war years no exploration took place on the acreage, but Total continued to pay its fees to the government in Khartoum to retain the block.
