ExxonMobil Negotiates with Chad over Mega-Fine

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Following a Chadian court decision to fine US supermajor ExxonMobil $74 billion, the firm has begun negotiations to drop the fine by a significant amount. ExxonMobil was told by the court in October to pay the fine because of a dispute over royalties, Bloomberg reported.

The court, which also ordered payment of $819 million in overdue royalties, imposed the fine in response to a complaint from Chad’s finance ministry that an ExxonMobil-led consortium had not met its tax obligations.
