Tuesday, July 12, 2016

Fighting between government forces and rebel troops have resumed in South Sudan. According to reports heavy fighting is being seen once again in Africa’s newest nation.

Battles using tanks and helicopters broke out late last week between government troops and troops backing vice president Riek Machar in the capital of Juba. Hundreds have been killed in Juba since the fighting broke out.

According to a Reuters report, fighting intensified on July 11 with two helicopters firing in the direction of Machar’s headquarters, while residents reported tanks on the street. A UN official said heavy gunfire had erupted around its bases where hundreds of civilians have fled to get away from the fighting.
