Fire at Angola LNG Could Cause Delays

Thursday, May 16, 2013

Angola LNG, which was expected online last year and then again at the outset of 2013, saw a serious setback in April. The facility caught on fire just hours before production was to begin. The fire will almost certainly cause another delay in the beleaguered project.

The incident was caused by a small electrical fire that broke out when a high voltage cable overloaded as operations were about to begin, according to a private report by energy consultants Poten & Partners, seen by Reuters and corroborated by industry sources.

“Operators were just hours away from making LNG when the incident occurred,” the Reuters report quoting the Poten report on the April 15 fire said, adding the overloaded cable was connected to a helper motor linked to a compressor.

While there will most likely be another delay, a spokesman for the project said the industry should see production flows begin by the end of June.

“Angola LNG is currently in the process of testing and restarting the plant in readiness for first LNG,” the spokesman said.
