FLEC Calls for Election Boycott

Thursday, February 9, 2017

The Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), a separatist rebel group in Angola, has called on citizens in the country’s oil producing region to boycott parliamentary elections in August. FLEC, who has been fighting for an independent Cabinda province for decades, has stated it will not participate in a “foreign” election.

“The FLEC does not accept the permanence of a foreign power on our territory, but does not want to interfere in the internal affairs of Angola,” the group said in a statement, according to Reuters. “For this reason, FLEC urges all the people of Cabinda to not participate in presidential elections in Angola,” it said.

While Angola’s longtime ruler Jose Eduardo dos Santos will not be a candidate for president in the upcoming elections, it is expected that his ruling party, the MPLA, will carry on in his stead through Defense Minister Joao Lourenco.
