More Flights to Tanzania in Wake of Economic Boom

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Two Emirati airlines just announced that their newest destination is Tanzania. Etihad Airways, based out of Abu Dhabi, will add Dar es Salaam as its 110th destination globally and its 11th destination in Africa while Dubai’s flydubai added Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Kilimanjaro.

Etihad flights will start in December 2015, offering a two-way connectivity via an Airbus A320 aircraft with 16 business class and 120 economy class seats. The company said in a release that the demand for the new route would be boosted by strong flows of business and leisure travelers, as well as cargo volumes, between the East Africa region and the Indian sub-continent and China. CEO and president James Hogan said: “Africa has one of the world’s fastest growing regional economies, and the launch of this new route also enhances access and the two-way flow of trade and tourism between the continent and key destinations across our global network, supports inbound tourism, encourages investment, and provides much needed local employment.”

flydubai will commence its flights to the East African country in October. Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, said: “With the addition of these three new destinations in Tanzania we’ve doubled our network in North and East Africa this year, strengthening our commitment to serving previously underserved markets.”

With Tanzania currently planning around $19 billion in transport and utilities infrastructure projects, more international investors will look for airlines making direct flights. Tanzania is an important market for the UAE as the Gulf nation is the primary GCC trade partner for the African country. Between 2007 and 2012, trade between UAE and Tanzania increased by more than 350% to $761 million.
