Former President’s Son Charged with Fraud in Angola

Wednesday, March 28, 2018

José Filomeno dos Santos, the son of Angola’s former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos, is being charged with fraud in Angola. The prosecutor general’s office said the fraud charge revolves around a $500 million transaction out of an account at the central bank.

Jose Filomeno Dos Santos, during his father’s reign, was the head of Angola’s $5-billion sovereign wealth fund.

Authorities in the UK froze the $500 million due to suspicions over the transaction. The UK authorities have now said the money can now be returned to Angola.

Prosecutors said the alleged fraud does not fall under any of Angola’s amnesty for financial wrongdoing or repatriation of overseas funds and the crime would not be pardoned, a Reuters report said.

“A pardon will not work…This case will run to its final outcome,” said Luis Benza Zanga, vice prosecutor general and head of the National Directorate for Criminal Investigations
