Friendly Competition between Ghana & Nigeria

Friday, May 4, 2018

Ghana and Nigeria both demonstrated a healthy competition between the two nations during their presentation at the Africa Procurement Forum hosted by the US Commerical Service during the 50th Offshore Technology Conference in Houston.   Representing Ghana was HE Minister of Energy Boakye Agyarko and for Nigeria, Maikanti Baru, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. Both officials highlighted opportunities in their respective oil, gas and power sectors.

Minister Agyarko revealed that Ghana has plans to become a regional petroleum hub and toward that goal stressed that the country is committed to “creating an environment for the private sector to operate and dominate” in areas such as law finance, telecoms, logistics, services, etc. The Petroleum Hub will be completely privately funded.

Mr Baru stressed that natural gas is the strong focus of Nigeria for the coming years and that opportunities within the sector are far-reaching. The plan includes further monetizing flared gas via innovative solutions such as mini-LNG, in-situ power generation, CNG, among them. Another goal for Nigeria is to become a regional refining hub, Baru stated.

Both speakers highlighted their strong talent pools and local content regulations and suggested investors monetize their production to the large regional markets, and in Nigeria’s case, nationally with its population of 197 million.
