Gabon and Petronas Sign Contracts

Thursday, August 8, 2019

Gabon’s Minister of Petroleum, Gas and Hydrocarbons, Noël Mboumba, signed two contracts for exploration and production sharing between the Gabonese government and Petronas. Petronas was represented by Azman Ba Aziz, Director General, Strategy and Trade at the signing.

The blocks in question, F12 and F13, or Yitu and Meboun, are the two blocks awarded to the Malaysian firm off the coast of Gabon. The blocks are located in the sub-basin near Mayumba and cover a total area of 4,368.49 sq km.

Mboumba revealed that the signing was seen as a direct result of the country’s petroleum code. The Minister said “We had a hydrocarbon code that was not attractive and for five years we did not register a contract. Today, with the promulgation, by the Head of State HE Ali Bongo Ondimba, of the new hydrocarbons code, Gabon is in the process of expanding its oil sector both offshore and onshore.”

Five years after signing the Likuale CEPP, Petronas now holds three assets in the Gabonese sedimentary basin.
