A coup attempt to oust one of Africa’s longest standing rulers, President Ali Bongo, took place this morning in Gabon. Soldiers took over the national radio station, announcing the establishment of a “restoration council.”
In a statement read on the radio the officers leading the attempt condemned Bongo’s New Year’s address, which “reinforced doubts about the president’s ability to continue to carry out of the responsibilities of his office,” said Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang, leader of the self-declared Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon. Bongo’s address took place from Morocco and was his first since he suffered a stroke in October.
“Once again, one time too many, the wielders of power deceptively continue to instrumentalize the person of Ali Bongo Ondimba, a patient devoid of many of his physical and mental faculties,” said Ondo Obiang.
The government claims that the majority of the officers involved in the coup have been arrested and according to the communications ministry the “situation” is under control. There were still reports of shots being fired in the capital, Libreville.
