Kenya: Gas Encountered While Looking for Water

Monday, October 22, 2018

Natural gas was discovered while drilling a water well in the Kieni constituency in Kenya’s Nyeri county. The National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation, who had been contracted by the Nyeri county government to drill the borehole, encountered the gas after drilling down 250 ft.

County officials and relevant agencies were immediately notified of the unexpected development.

Activities at the site were halted and the Geothermal Development Company, National Oil Corp. Kenya, and the Department of Mining and Geology were dispatched to the borehole site to collect samples of the gas.

The samples have been taken to a government laboratory for chemical analysis. Samples from several other boreholes were also collected for testing.
