Ghana Files for Arbitration in Maritime Dispute

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

An arbitration suit has been filed under the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea by Ghana aimed at resolving its ongoing maritime dispute with neighboring Cote d’Ivoire.

The boundaries for the maritime border between the two was never delineated and as more and more petroleum exploration takes place off the coast of both countries it has proved to be a bone of contention. Currently their respective maps show offshore waters overlapping.

The sooner the dispute is settled the better for oil and gas companies looking to move forward on their work programs or gaining access in the region.
