Tuesday, July 7, 2020

In the run up to Ghana’s December presidential elections, former Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama, who seeks to regain office, has chosen Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman as his running mate for this year’s election. She will become the first woman on a major party’s presidential ticket in the country.

Mahama was Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017; he was defeated in the late 2016 presidential election by the current president Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mahama announced his selection on his Facebook page. “The National Executive Committee of our great party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) this afternoon, unanimously, endorsed my nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as my Running Mate for the December 2020 election.”

Mrs. Opoku-Agyeman, 69, is a former educator who later became Minister of Education. According to the post on Mahama’s Facebook posting, she also became the first female vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Coast in 2008.
