Ghana needs to focus on natural gas independence according to a recent presentation given by Mohammed Amin Adam, executive director of the Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP). Adam believes that for various reasons relying on gas imports from Nigeria is not the best option as Nigeria is looking to get better prices from other markets.
This was disclosed this at an oil and gas workshop recently in Accra themed: “Gas Commercialization as a solution to Ghana’s energy crisis – Myth or Reality.”
Nigeria’s plans to export its gas through Niger and Algeria to Europe, however unlikely, should have Ghana developing its indigenous gas facilities. Adam said Ghana should use its indigenous gas to improve the energy sector while importing gas to develop the country’s petrochemical industry.
Ghana should also turn use of other alternatives to boost the energy sector attendees at the workshop were informed.
