Ghana Ready for Voltaian Basin Exploration

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

Ghana is ready to begin exploration in its onshore Voltaian Basin and put measures into place for that purpose. The Voltaian Basin, according to historical geological work, contains the potential for both oil and gas in the Northern Region and other onshore areas.

Daniel Amlalo, Executive Director of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said that the EPA will provide the required guiding principle and recommendations to ensure that there are minimal risks in those potential areas.

In a News Ghana report, Senior Program Officer of Petroleum at EPA, Samuel Kofi Agbetsiafa, said that the project will boost the country’s access to LPG to 50% by 2020; although how this can be achieved in so short of time without even a discovery being made as yet is unclear.

The Voltaian Basin is a large sedimentary onshore basin of approximately 106,000 km, covering 24 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Northern, Brong-Ahafo, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions.
