In an attempt to stave off an even worse power crisis in the country, the Ghanaian government has given into Nigeria’s demands for natural gas payment. The government said it will pay Nigeria’s N-Gaz the $170 million it owes by early next year to avoid N-Gaz’ threat to cut off supplies.
The first payment will be made in November according spokesperson for the Ministry of Power Kweku Sersah said in a posting on the ministry’s Facebook page. Sersah assured that the government would meet all its payment deadlines.
The posting on the ministry’s Facebook page said that the deal was negotiated when Ghana sent a ‘high-powered’ delegation to Nigeria.
Ghana’s arrears to N-Gaz go back to 2012.
