Ghana’s Gas Supplies Lacking

Tuesday, April 3, 2018

Since the start of 2018 Ghana has received only about 60 Mmcf/d of gas from Nigeria via WAPCo facilities, less than half of the volume under contract. The volume under contract for delivery is 123 Mmcf/d, which Nigeria has never been able to meet.

The news was revealed by Kweku AndohAwotwi, chairman of the board of the Volta River Authority (VRA), in an interview with Ghana Web. According to Awotwi the current flows are partly due to Ghana’s inability to pay off debts to NGas, Nigeria’s state-owned gas company. Ghana owes roughly $40 million, but Nigeria’s erratic supply is another factor.

“We are about half of what we were promised contractually and that is not enough. There are many reasons for this: the vandalism of the pipelines and the fact that we have not paid our bills,” he said, before indicating that discussions are underway to move the daily supply of Nigerian gas up to 90 Mmcf/d.

In the meantime, Ghana continues to obtain Nigerian gas because the VRA is pre-paying for this gas. “We are putting in place letters of credit to get the gas,” he said.
