Gunfight over Ransom Leaves Six Dead

Monday, September 29, 2014

A gunfight in Somalia has resulted in the death of six people. The shootout began over an alleged ransom payment that was tied to the release of a German-US journalist Michael Scott Moore who was held hostage in Somalia for more than two years

Colonel Mohamed Aden, a senior police officer, told Reuters that the police believe the people involved in the abduction and the shootout were relatives. “We do not know how much ransom they took but we understand they fought before they divided the cash,” he said.

A local militiaman, Zakaria Farah, told Reuters the ransom had totaled $2 million although he did not say who had made the payment. Somali officials deny any knowledge of a ransom being paid.

German officials confirmed Moore’s release but did not offer any specific details.
