The terror of Paris on November 13 was carried over to the African country of Mali as terrorists took control of the Radisson Blu hotel and took an estimated 170 hostages. Gunmen shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ burst into the hotel on the morning of November 20 taking the hotel and its inhabitants hostage. Two al Qaeda allies, both tied to the Algerian jihadist Mokhtar Belmokhtar, claimed responsibility for a hostage taking.
Of the 170 hostages, 30 were released unarmed after successfully reciting the Islamic profession of faith.
Troops from France and UN peacekeepers controlled the roads while Malian soldiers fought their way through the hotel to free the hostages. The Malian soldiers liberated dozens of captives after the 10-hour siege, however 27 people died, five of those were the attackers. Malian military officials confirmed the death toll without identifying the other 22 people killed.
Among those killed were at least one American, two Belgians, three Chinese, and six Russians according to officials from those countries.
“When the terrorists understood that we were coming for them, they executed the hostages in their possession,” said one soldier.
