Hundreds Dead Offshore Libya

Sunday, August 30, 2015

In another case of African migrants trying to reach European shores, several boats capsized off Libya during the month of August. Early in the month more than 25 people were confirmed dead when a fishing boat carrying hundreds of migrants capsized on in the Mediterranean Sea, about 15 miles north of the Libyan coast, according to the Italian coast guard who undertook rescue operations saving more than 400 from the same fate.

In an August 26 incident, over 1,000 were rescued from two fishing boats after a harrowing night at sea. Rescue operations were undertaken by a Swedish Coast Guard ship as well as an Italian warship.

Many of the migrants make their way up from sub-Saharan Africa through Libya to make the treacherous trip across the Mediterranean in search of a better life. In recent years, Libyan immigrants of African and Asian descent are increasingly trying to escape the fighting that has overtaken the country over the past four years.
