Nigeria’s Ibeno community in the state of Akwa-Ibom, has issued an ultimatum to ExxonMobil giving it one week to clean up an alleged oil spill from one of its facilities or face sanctions in the area.
The Ibeno community is upset that the US supermajor has not disclosed the amount of oil spilled when the Joint Inspection Team (JIT) of stakeholders visited the site, according to ThisDay.
The government of Akwa Ibom ordered the JIT comprising of representatives from Ibeno community, ExxonMobil, Depthwize Nigeria Ltd, NOSDRA, and other stakeholders to investigate the latest oil spill reports in the area and the clean-up procedures.
