According to reports our of Libya, the Islamist militant accredited for being behind the attack on Algeria’s In Amenas gas plant in January 2013, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, was killed in an airstrike over Libya.
According to the recognized government in Libya, the airstrike was conducted by the US military, who confirmed that Belmokhtar was the target of the strike conducted on June 13.
“I can confirm that the target of last night’s counterterrorism strike in Libya was Mokhtar Belmokhtar,” Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said in a statement.
“The strike was carried out by U.S. aircraft,” Warren said. “We are continuing to assess the results of the operation and will provide more details as appropriate.”
Belmokhtar was a major figure in the insurgency problem in North Africa, always slipping out of the grasp of authorities which earned him the nickname “uncatchable” from the French military.
